Running the Australian Laboratory for Advanced Media production I often have to provide a broad contextual background (as well as detailed insights!) to many of our seminars and labs. Over the past few months I have presented across a range of topics suggested in the blog title and lucky for some these have been captured in video form! So the player below contains (for now) seven separate presentations, a mix of free informal evening ones through to more formal full day workshop intros. The video production value is variable so I add the audio only versions at the bottom too and there are links to the other many great speakers at each session, detailed below the video box. These are unedited and contain the usual umms, arrs, errors, coughs & pregnant pauses, oh and I hope some great content. All are 16by9 apart from the serious games in 4by3, Enjoy

A series of tools Gary has created for hundreds of his workshops and training, designed to help teams generate ideas or quick pitches from assigned stories/genre/intention/business etc: You will need Shockwave and/or Flash players installed into your browser to view these – get it from Adobe here.

Click the links below

SOCIAL MULTI PLATFORM TV BRIEF O’MATIC – “Flash app, designed as a tool to develop your audience/user centric thinking when creating Multi Platform Social properties. It gives you a well known existing story world and requires you to meet two ‘user centric’ objectives (primary and secondary) and also a business model to fulfil”

TRANSMEDIA-BRIEF-O-MATIC FLASH “This randomly chooses (on command) story/TV worlds and two simple ‘objectives’ to take into account in your presentation back. There are two sections TV extension and pure Transmedia.

PITCH-O-MATIC SHOCKWAVEFor students & media professionals to develop their ‘off-the-cuff’ pitch and presentation skills”!

WINDMILLS OF OUR TRANSMEDIA MINDS – FLASH “…that takes you on a journey!  To help exercise those ‘cross media’ muscles or drive you bonkers. It is a work in progress (what isn’t nowadays) and many more ‘user journey’ options will be added

MULTI-PLATFORM MOVIE STORY & BUSINESS INTENTION’ER – FLASH “A well known movie story world, across 5 selectable key genre

GAME GENERATOR  SHOCKWAVE “For teachers and students to come up with the seeds of a new game”!

MASH-UP MACHINESHOCKWAVE “To get you thinking about new online services”

TWEETOMATORSHOCKWAVEFor tweeters who are sometimes lost for things to say”!

FORMAT-O-MATORSHOCKWAVEA ‘Cross Media Format Generator’ that plays on a few key concepts and potential new formats.”

In progress:

USER JOURNEY O’MATIC – will, based on your story fragments/settings create a route through multi platforms

SOCIAL MEDIA BALANCE – requires you to maintain and grow a user based community by carefully clicking at the right times across social media and PR releases!

ALTERNATE REALITY GAME O’MATIC – An extension of the windmills machine above, based on your story world and style of ARG it will give you a suggestive sequence of  ‘story based events’ in sequence

heavyrainAs is my curse I gave another overview introduction presentation last week on films made with games engines aka machinima. I then ran a workshop on the production process and techniques particularly looking at dedicated machinima tools through to games engines – now my YouTube machinimas have gone past 300 000 must be doing something right for some!  But one of my key points in my intro talk was the exponential evolution of the form. It has moved away from dodgy, quick gag,  non-lip synch first person shooter ‘head-shots’ through to quality tales – emotional drama, visually entrancing alongside real character led comedy. Add to this the fact that many machys are at a quality now to rival tradtional animation (see examples below).

So all speakers referred to story, quality writing but also the importance of being true to the culture of the existing game world (more at the bottom). Here are my opening slides showing key examples, classified into my categories as to what machinima is created for:

Clip above from the earlier Australian version of The Phone in Feb 09 & interview with its producer Chris Berry here

Interesting timing to receive a prod from the publicist of this show as I am in the middle of mentoring groups of AFTRS directing students who are developing ARG/Social Media drama. The tendency is to always over author the story environments and they turn into endless quests through fixed content but in this new hybrid form The Phone, described below, starts to mash-up urban locative quests with high production value TV crime/spy drama – a true development of form & innovation?
