ABOUT Living statistics – Many of us who have been following social media since the early 90s are very sensitive to today’s exponential growth in usage of the sharing web. Inspired by other cool real time counters, Social Media Industry Head, Laurel Papworth, my own Rise & Rise of Social Media presentations and various ‘cool’ videos (you know the ones) I decided to put together this little Flash app (which is in constant development) showing how active & dynamic the Social Web, Mobile Industry and Game Business is.
If you want to embed this on your page just click the button in the bottom left of the app to copy the code to your clipboard OR use the code/s in the boxes at the bottom of this post. Drag select it all then copy/paste into any site. Use this code as I will be regularly updating it with latest stats.
More about the Count – I quickly built and coded the app based on data culled from a range of social media sources & sites originally at the end of Sept 2009. The design has been finessed extra functionality has been added such as week, month & year lookahead/backs plus some dynamic data input. Also mobile and games tabs were added. (A combined Film, TV and advertising tab in development Apr 2010).
The social web has exploded in the last year and below are some of the social media statistics based on key data points that the ‘Gary’s Social Media Count’ is based on (many will be updated!).

This is a really nifty tool! The figures are just phenomenal.
Great work.
Hi are these global stats?
Thanks
Yes they are Simon – you can see the sources in a list in the post, all are global except where stated in the item itself! Cheers
Ăłtima esse grĂĄfico em tempo real das principais midias sociais!
Those numbers are incredible.
and it’s really cool that you can just embed this into your own site site, which I will do soon:)
It will be a very interesting page to show my prospects how much they are missing out if they don’t have a strong online presence.
It might be too late to reply to this post, but thanks for sharing.
Impressive… how much of it is spam?= LOL
I must admit it would be nice to have this app that showed all the reasons why we benefit from marketing with social media. This is one of the coolest social media posts iâve come across. Itâs really interesting too to see how flash is adapting to social media and how things are integrating. Thank you.
social media is very fascinating, does the apps show the real time?
What an amazing content is this and surely it makes realize each and everyone who read this. Thanks for providing so fantastic and sweet suggestions ….i really appreciate it.

Useless. Without sense. Without reliable Data.
Why:
www.personalizemedia.com/garys-mobile-industry-count/
and
www.personalizemedia.com/garys-social-media-count/
are counting same items different. Look e.g. at the “iphones sold”-counter
The first one is counting nearly at half speed than the second.
Thank you for your lovely comment Frank?! A small point about statistics, they change – so – the Mobile counter was from Sept 2010 and used a different data source from the one updated in January which now has more ‘unified’ data sources…in any event given I am not updating the old mobile one so I have removed that post. So Frank, some good has come of your ‘contribution’…
it should be update, so people can see the exact number not the flash graphic
To tell you the truth, I didn’t think I liked the counter at first. A bit gawdy maybe. But then reflection and after reading the article I have changed my mind.
It is actually a succinct visual way of presenting the data. Which is virtually impossible to read and take in if it is just listed (see article).
The only think I would suggest though is if there was a way of drilling down to see the actual statistics. Maybe as a ‘hover’ function. Or maybe I like statistics too much.
This is an awesome tool and those figures are really out of the world.
Thanks for posting.
This counter is awesome! Great idea! Phenomenal figures.

Hey Gary, love it… Great resource. In the realm of small details, thought I’d point out that in the list entitled “Some of the sources for the games counter”, you duplicated “465 million user hours in second life over the last year,” with the last one referencing the Linden source…
Nice job (will put out a post on it this week for sure). Best from Paris. Minter

Hey Gary! This is really great! At last I’ve found the most reliable resources here. Thanks for the share. I bookmarked the page. I will come back on this page from time to time.
What a great article and tools, big compliments from Germany!
Very interesting.. checking how to implement this tool with my newest created project.
Perhaps your app counter should display time as days, hours, minutes, seconds.
Us 5th graders out here can’t relate to 4,323 seconds. đ Now start having some conversations about learning to navigate through, benefit from and participate in the “tsunami” of information in the “internet cloud”.

Many sites, as well as here, are fashioned with pre-developed software. This has the consequence that shape despite the huge opportunities offered to their own intentions more personal and individual, most pages a “fad” and are subject to the same swimming upstream. There are very beautiful and interesting ways to make more personal self-promotion.

Funny and informative. Gives clear idea about what ‘social’ is about. The power of collaboration. All internet entrepreneurs hope someday get into that list.

I like this Counter very much.
You have include google+.
I think there is a mistake in this version, because the google+ shared items are as high as the facebook items.
HI Peter – Yes have a look at the sources for those. Both Facebook and Google are quoting the same numbers – this is suggesting the current total of early highly social Google+ users are sharing nearly 20 times as much as the average Facebook user – assuming approx 800m FB and 20m G+. But I agree it looks odd at the moment!

Great Application…!
I am a student at the University of South Alabama in Dr. Strange’s edm 310 class. This made me realize that what many of those students were saying was exactly how I feel every single day about the traditional classroom. The video was set inside a lecture classroom and basically asked the students to write down what many students were thinking about in a typical lecture. Things were said such as “I buy hundred dollar textbooks that I never open up” and “I will read 8 books a year and read 2300 webpages and 1281 facebook profiles.” Watching this video you can tell these are students just like me feeling the same way I do. The traditional classroom serves a great purpose but with technology playing such a huge role in so many of our lives I feel major universities should try and better integrate social media with college courses. When I become a teacher I hope to take this video and try to help my students not feel like some of these students do.
Thanks Jessica – you captured why I created the counter precisely. The world has shifted from locked down broadcast content (books, TV, films) to be much more two way and where every one can contribute to the knowledge base. I think it is a big issue for bigger educational places to change and support social media as, like companies and brands, there is still this need to protect themselves from criticism and external influence – control mainly. But this is often those in charge who still don’t use or understand Social Media or in some extreme cases, don’t even have a connected computer outside their office! My counter hopefully highlights that regardless of what happens inside closed wall universities and schools, the conversation outside is getting louder and louder, teachers must be aware that to ignore that conversation is tantamount to ignoring the world, and must do this at their peril.
Hi Gray,
My name is LaVenia Curtis, I am a students at the University of South Alabama and I am currently taking a class called EDM 310 Dr.Strange is my teacher. I enjoyed reading your blog post. Taking EDM 310 and reading your blog has made me realize how much technology has impacted our world. I always find it amazing how much technology people use everyday. Your Social Media Counter is cool because it shows by the second what kind of technology people are using. I have a blog as well about my journey through EDM 310, curtislaveniaedm310.blogspot.com and you can follow me on twittter @christian_mommi. Thank you
I am a student at the University of South Alabama in Dr. Strangeâs EDM 310 class. Your post was very thought provoking. I am like the many other college student who constantly plays on facebook and twitter on my phone and computer throughout the day. I think that the traditional classroom setting is becoming increasingly more and more outdated. Technology plays such a huge role in our society we need to incorporate it into our classrooms. I hope that I can make this transition and include social media and technology into my classes once I become a teacher, I know it will make a difference in their education.
Thank you for your post!
My name is Amanda and I am a student in Dr. Strange’s EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama. Reading your post it made me realize even more how much we depend on technology. Especially two way technology where people from all over can contribute to one idea. I will be commenting a little more depth on my blog if you would like to check it out please feel free to. It can be found at killoughamandaedm310.blogspot.com/. Thanks for your contribution to our class.
I’m Jeffrey Dorsey a student in Dr. Strange’s EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama. Once I started reading over these numbers in your post, I realized the affect that technology has on our world it’s amazing. Technology plays a bigger role than people understand. This is why we need to in every way try and get our world up to date on these type things cause before you know it, technology will be taking over!
Hello, my name is Kristen Phelps and I am an Elementary Education major at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. I am currently in Dr. Stranges’s EDM 310 and a part of our assignment this week was to look at your post. I want to start out by saying that the Social Media Count is really truly amazing! It’s almost hard to fathom! I think this is such an awesome way of showing people just how much technology is becoming a staple in our lives. Thank you for doing this!
